REMINDER - WE HAVE MOVED!!! #206 - 11939 224th Street Maple Ridge, BC, V2X 6B2
Laurel Aasen
I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor (BCACC #13124) with over a decade of experience, and I feel genuinely grateful to do this work.
My specialties are working with individual adults and teenagers living with anxiety and/or experiencing life changes. Below are some descriptions of the clientele and issues I support with:
-
Individuals experiencing major life transitions and feel overwhelmed (eg. a move, adjustment to university, change in relationship, new job).
-
Have anxiety that interferes with their functioning (eg. Social anxiety, fear, panic attacks, fear, generalized anxiety).
-
Live with chronic pain or chronic illness and want support in navigating healthcare options or tools to manage pain.
-
Have experienced trauma and are looking for ways to support their nervous system.
-
Are wanting support with grief and bereavement.
-
Have specific goals but feel stuck in regards to moving forwards (eg. health goals, new entrepreneurs).
-
Want space to explore concerns about their relationships, or are going through the end of a relationship.
-
Are wanting to explore current patterns of thinking, feeling, relating, and behaving, to create more opportunity for choice in their lives.
-
Are educators experiencing burnout and fatigue.
My approach as a counsellor is practical, compassionate, and collaborative, with the goal of helping you reconnect with your life in ways that feel meaningful and sustainable. I draw from evidence-based therapies including CBT, DBT, EMDR, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), always tailoring interventions to your goals and values. I have successfully worked with individuals who identify as neurodivergent.
Integrity, curiosity, and personal autonomy guide my clinical work. Outside of session, I’m a type-B mom to two young kiddos (and a dog-mom to a spirited Jack Russell), a donut connoisseur, and an avid Fleetwood Mac listener. I have an uncanny ability to fail miserably at cooking and pottery, no matter how much I practice. But my memory for lyrics from 90’s music is top notch.

Carrie Battiste
Carrie is a Registered Social Worker with over 10 years of experience. She is passionate about supporting mothers and parents during any stage of the perinatal period, from creating a birth plan for the baby’s delivery to providing treatment for anxiety, depression, grief and loss, difficulty bonding with the baby and stress in the couple relationship. Becoming a mother can feel isolating, overwhelming, lonely and overstimulating, and new mothers often struggle with feelings of guilt, shame, anger and a loss of self or identity. Carrie provides a safe space for processing these feelings and supports mothers to develop practical tools for coping and to build confidence for meeting their child’s needs.
Carrie also provides support navigating unhealthy relationships, including problems with violence, controlling behaviour and toxicity. Clients are invited to explore interpersonal struggles and to develop insight into what fosters a healthy, lasting relationship. Are you pushing away or attracting healthy relationships? Carrie helps cultivate insight into your ‘inner working model’ or ‘default settings’ that may be keeping you stuck in unhelpful and dysfunctional communication patterns. Carrie offers the Adult Attachment Interview as a therapeutic tool for growing insight into your interpersonal relationships, attachment style and patterns.
In a counselling session with Carrie, you can expect a trauma-informed, relational and attachment-based lens that prioritizes safety, connection and client-led progress. She provides pyschoeducation about neuroscience to learn about your baby’s brain development and your own body’s neurobiology and stress response systems. It is common for trauma from the past to resurface after giving birth, and Carrie is there to make sense out of these changes while meeting each person where they’re at. Carrie helps you to break hurtful cycles of care and to cultivate your ability to set boundaries with others when needed. EMDR is also an option for those who are ready to dive deeper in their journey of healing.
Carrie welcomes all people to participate in therapy and has worked with fathers, 2SLGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. Carrie recognizes that not all parents are cisgender, heterosexual or Canadian-born and she welcomes people from all identities, cultures and backgrounds to explore their parenting and mental health journey without judgement. Carrie approaches therapy through a social justice lens that validates experiences of discrimination, injustice, and systemic and institutional oppression. Carrie recognizes her own biases and invites client feedback when she can do better.

My journey into counselling began in my childhood, growing up in the Lower Mainland in a vibrant, blended family as a proud first-generation Canadian and the child of Dutch immigrants. My parents were foster caregivers. From a young age, I witnessed the power of care, empathy, and community. These early experiences shaped my lifelong passion for advocating for children’s rights and supporting those facing adversity. Since earning my undergraduate degree, I have spent more than two decades working closely with young people and families in a variety of roles, from front-line support and foster parenting to advocacy within the child welfare system. My work is always guided by a deep respect for the resilience of young people and a belief in their right to be heard and empowered.
I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in Counselling later in life to further develop an approach rooted in relational, trauma-informed, and client-centered care. I see each person as the expert of their own story and feel honoured to walk alongside them on their healing journey. I bring curiosity, humility, and heartfelt presence to every session, recognizing the immense courage it takes to reach out for support.
My Approach
I tailor my approach to meet the unique needs and goals of each client. I draw from a range of therapeutic modalities—including attachment-based, strengths-focused, and trauma-informed frameworks—to support emotional healing, personal growth, and meaningful change. I value client feedback and see our relationship as collaborative, built on trust, respect, and shared insight. While much of my work has focused on supporting youth and families, I welcome clients of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you are navigating grief, anxiety, life transitions, or relationship challenges, my goal is to help you feel more connected to yourself and more equipped to meet life with clarity and compassion.
When I am not in the counselling room, you will often find me out in nature, hiking in the mountains with my dog, skiing into the backcountry, or camping with family and friends. These moments of stillness and adventure help me stay grounded and renewed.

Each of us holds the answers and the strength needed to navigate even the most difficult circumstances. Still, we may benefit from support in uncovering this inner strength and the solutions within it. I work with adults, youth, and families to address traumas still held in the body/mind, anxiety, depression, self-discovery, and relationships. My passion is working with families. I focus on the power of emotion and attachment and their role in the wellbeing of families and the emotional development of children. My goal will be to support you in building healthier relationships that can survive difficult experiences in the future.
I focus on Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, Cognitive behavioral therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I also offer EMDR and the Safe and Sound protocol (SSP) which is an auditory protocol which helps people who have difficulty feeling safe, and being connected, calm and social with others. It can be helpful for those who experience anxiety, have experienced trauma in the past and those with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder. Learn to acknowledge and manage your own emotions and behaviors and help children do the same, challenge unhelpful ways of thinking and learn skills in interpersonal relationships, distress tolerance and reduce stress by increasing mindfulness.
You will come to see a counselor but foremost you will find a person who believes that you are the expert in your own life. I offer my clients a space free of judgment and blame; a space that allows for even the most difficult feelings and situations to be heard and understood from a place of compassion and understanding. I look forward to meeting you.

You’re trying hard to keep it all together, but you’re exhausted.
Life seems out of your control and every small decision feels too big to handle. You are unsure of who you are or where you belong. It’s a battle to get out of bed and face another day. The weight of it all is suffocating and you’re terrified that life can never be different or better.
There is hope and I can help.
> I believe you are the expert on your life and that you and your story are unique.
Because of this, any work we do together will be tailored to your needs and goals. Whether in-person or online, I bring my expertise on mental health, trauma, emotions and the body and brain to help you on your journey.
I am available to work with children, pre-teens, teens, and adults. I specialize in working with clients who feel stuck, who are struggling with issues from their childhood, Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and adult TCKs, and others who have experienced the stresses and losses of cross-cultural transitions. I work with clients to help them identify and overcome or heal what is keeping them stuck, struggling, stressed and overwhelmed.
THERAPY APPROACH:
I work within a trauma-informed client-centered existential framework.
Lifespan Integration Therapy
Lifespan Integration Therapy is a gentle, body-based, trauma processing therapy technique that uses a sensory timeline of your life to reorganize connections in your brain and heal wounds, create change and resolve issues.
> “the process is gentle, so therapeutic goals can be reached without re-traumatizing the person in therapy. The approach is based on the mind-body connection and relies on the innate ability of the mind and/or body to heal itself.”
> ~ Source: https://www.goodtherapy.org/learn-about-therapy/types/lifespan-integration
It is a therapy that incorporates principles of neurobiology, attachment, ego states, narrative, and integrative ‘power therapies’ like OEI and EMDR.
