Each of us holds the answers and the strength needed to navigate even the most difficult circumstances. Still, we may benefit from support in uncovering this inner strength and the solutions within it. I work with adults, youth, and families to address traumas still held in the body/mind, anxiety, depression, self-discovery, and relationships. My passion is working with families. I focus on the power of emotion and attachment and their role in the wellbeing of families and the emotional development of children. My goal will be to support you in building healthier relationships that can survive difficult experiences in the future.

I focus on Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, Cognitive behavioral therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I also offer EMDR and the Safe and Sound protocol (SSP) which is an auditory protocol which helps people who have difficulty feeling safe, and being connected, calm and social with others. It can be helpful for those who experience anxiety, have experienced trauma in the past and those with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder. Learn to acknowledge and manage your own emotions and behaviors and help children do the same, challenge unhelpful ways of thinking and learn skills in interpersonal relationships, distress tolerance and reduce stress by increasing mindfulness.

You will come to see a counselor but foremost you will find a person who believes that you are the expert in your own life. I offer my clients a space free of judgment and blame; a space that allows for even the most difficult feelings and situations to be heard and understood from a place of compassion and understanding. I look forward to meeting you.

My name is Kathryn and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). I am passionate about walking alongside other’s as they experience growth and healing in their lives. I believe strongly in the resilience of humans and the courage that it takes to step into the counselling room. I see counselling as space for anyone and everyone, whether you have a current life situation you want to process and work through or you’re unsure where to start but want a safe, supportive environment to work through life’s inevitable challenges.

I view growth and change as something that is fostered through validation, understanding and compassion. My approach is person-centered, humanistic and attachment-focussed. Your safety in the counselling room is a top priority to me as we uncover and explore your life. My hope is that you will leave the counselling room feeling heard, seen and understood and that through our therapeutic relationship, you might feel safe to grow and heal. Ultimately, my goal is to help you begin to experience a sense of wholeness, authenticity and congruence as we start to tackle the obstacles in your life.

Lastly, I am an EMDR-trained therapist. This is a form of trauma-processing therapy that can help individuals understand and process traumatic experiences or life events that are still impacting them. Feel free to ask me more about this if it is of interest to you. A few other areas of interest for me as a counsellor are somatic therapy (using the body as a resource and mechanism of healing as well as Existential-Analysis (working with our fundamental realities as humans).

I look forward to meeting you!

A Letter from Ivy

Life is not only about enduring what it throws at you.

Whether you feel like you have tried everything you can,

or you need immediate support on what you are facing now,

this is the space for you. I am here for you.

I am here to open your dialogues with the world and with yourself, and to help you find and live with your inner consent – the feeling of “this is right for me”, “this is what I want for my life!”

What you can expect is a warm, safe, non-judgmental, and open place, where I will walk alongside you, listening to you and your needs, supporting you when you feel down or lost, affirming you when you make change happen!

I believe we are meant to meet each other. I honor our encounter by seeing you as a holistic person with strength, dreams, and inner wisdom - not only your symptoms or issues, and bringing my authentic self to our sessions - being open, being available, and being with you.

M.A., C.C.C.

You’re trying hard to keep it all together, but you’re exhausted.

Life seems out of your control and every small decision feels too big to handle. You are unsure of who you are or where you belong. It’s a battle to get out of bed and face another day. The weight of it all is suffocating and you’re terrified that life can never be different or better.

There is hope and I can help.

> I believe you are the expert on your life and that you and your story are unique.

Because of this, any work we do together will be tailored to your needs and goals. Whether in-person or online, I bring my expertise on mental health, trauma, emotions and the body and brain to help you on your journey.

I am available to work with children, pre-teens, teens, and adults. I specialize in working with clients who feel stuck, who are struggling with issues from their childhood, Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and adult TCKs, and others who have experienced the stresses and losses of cross-cultural transitions. I work with clients to help them identify and overcome or heal what is keeping them stuck, struggling, stressed and overwhelmed.

THERAPY APPROACH:

I work within a trauma-informed client-centered existential framework.

SPECIALTY:

Lifespan Integration Therapy

Lifespan Integration Therapy is a gentle, body-based, trauma processing therapy technique that uses a sensory timeline of your life to reorganize connections in your brain and heal wounds, create change and resolve issues.

> “the process is gentle, so therapeutic goals can be reached without re-traumatizing the person in therapy. The approach is based on the mind-body connection and relies on the innate ability of the mind and/or body to heal itself.”

> ~ Source: https://www.goodtherapy.org/learn-about-therapy/types/lifespan-integration

It is a therapy that incorporates principles of neurobiology, attachment, ego states, narrative, and integrative ‘power therapies’ like OEI and EMDR.

Welcome. My name is Danielle, and I am a registered clinical counsellor.

I have experience helping adults with a variety of different concerns including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, family conflict, relationship problems, boundaries, communication, and trauma. I also have several years of experience supporting people with eating disorders, disordered eating, over-exercising, body image concerns, orthorexia, and related challenges.

Therapy with me is collaborative, person-centred, nonjudgmental, and trauma-informed. What we work on together is based on your individual needs, preferences, and presenting concerns.

Generally speaking, I endeavour to offer a balance between the practical and the experiential. In other words, sometimes sessions include learning new “tools” and trying out new things, and sometimes sessions are more focused on attending to the deeper pain that often needs our attention and processing, too.

I am also a “systems thinker.” This means that, as part of therapy, we acknowledge and consider how factors outside of your control might have impacted you (and might continue to impact you).

My professional background includes work in victim services, crisis intervention, and other front line/emergency roles.

I am currently accepting new clients. Online video counselling allows me to work with people who live anywhere in BC.

Please note that for the time being, I am seeing everyone virtually.

I moved to Canada as a newcomer over 10 years ago from South Africa, hence I can offer services in both English and Afrikaans. Drawing on my diverse roots, advanced education, and practice experiences across various health and education organizations, I hope to journey alongside adults in finding their inner yes to being in this world as they navigate through life’s ‘messiness.’

Creating a relational space marked by respect, safety, compassion, humility, and attunement is crucial to building trust, showing up freely as ourselves with vulnerability, and having genuine conversations and experiences. Working together in this relational space will look different for each person since our lives are uniquely shaped by our roots and existence (experientially and genes) in contexts, past and current experiences, relationships, and future goals and dreams.

Due to my unique blended roles as a registered therapist, nurse, and educator, I have experience in working with adults from diverse cultures and minority groups, persons who encounter transitions, grief and loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, burnout, and those who struggle to maintain mental and /or physical health.

Although I am a ‘therapist in training’ in Existential Analysis (EA), I also integrate principles as needed from training I completed in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Level One Lifespan Integration (LI), Level One Motivational Interviewing (MI), Narrative Therapy, and some Experiential Therapies. I hold a Doctorate Curationis (DCur) Degree in Psychiatric Nursing Science from the University of Johannesburg in 2009. In 2017, I decided to pursue a blended career and completed an additional Masters in Clinical Counselling (MA Psych) at Trinity Western University in 2020. Past and current work settings include acute and sub-acute adult and youth in-patient psychiatry, maternity, reproductive health, assistant and assistant adjunct professor in under-graduate and graduate nursing programs, child and youth mental health, and private practice.
